I am looking for requirements, procedures and or policies for Drug and Alcohol screening prior to a provider working. Please answer the questions below:

Does your hospital require Drug and Alcohol Screening for providers prior to the start of working?

What if the provider is from another NH hospital? Can you use that Hospitals documentation?

Does the Medical Staff Office inform the provider of the required test? If so is this in your application packet to the provider, communicated when you are contracting or at orientation?

What is the envolvement of your Employee Health Office or HR in this procedure if any?

Thank you for your response!

~RE: Does your hospital require Drug and Alcohol Screening for providers prior to the start of working? NO

What is the envolvement of your Employee Health Office or HR in this procedure if any? NA, although for cause testing is done and is done by Employee Health

~RE: Currently we do not require a Drug and Alcohol Screening for providers prior to their start.

~RE: We do not require screening.

~RE: We do not require drug screening at this time.

~RE: We screen all employees at hire, but nothing further. We do not screen providers that are not employed with us.

~RE: We only do background checks on our providers. CMRC is a specialty hospital and not acute.

~RE: We just implemented a Drug Free workplace policy that pertains to all employess and Medical and Allied Health Staff.

Does your hospital require Drug and Alcohol Screening for providers prior to the start of working? Yes actually prior to signing of contract for employed providers and prior to the MSO being able to process applications for Non-Employed providers

What if the provider is from another NH hospital? Doesn't matter
Can you use that Hospitals documentation? No

Does the Medical Staff Office inform the provider of the required test? If so is this in your application packet to the provider, communicated when you are contracting or at orientation? Yes, we send the policy with a consent and the Quest Form to the provider. We document the form number and which provider it went to and inform the Lab and Employee Health Contact with that information. They have the option of coming here to employee health or going to a Quest lab for the screening.

What is the envolvement of your Employee Health Office or HR in this procedure if any?
The HR department has them complete the drug test before they can sign an employment contract. Employee health performs the screening and receive the results from the Quest lab if that was used, they then disseminate the information to the appropriate HR person or to me for Non-Employed providers.

~RE: We do not require drug/alcohol screening at this time.

~RE: We do not require drug and alcohol screening for credentialed providers at this time.

~RE: New Hampshire Hospital does not require drug screening for providers. Our employee health nurse is involved once a provider is offered a position (the majority of our providors are full time physicians working in house). The health nurse obtains immunization history and schedules a health screening.

I am also looking for a policy/procedure for Drug and Alcohol screening prior to a provider working at our facility.

If you do have such a policy/procedure at your facility, would you be willing to share it and email to Helen.Driscoll@weeksmedical.org. I would greatly appreciate it!

I forgot to mention in my prior post that I am looking for a policy/procedure for Drug and Alcohol screening prior to an EMPLOYED provider working at our facility. I would still appreciate receiving a copy of your policy/procedure if general for any provider working at your facility. Thank you!
