Do we have to grant an appointment to physicians who are being granted telemedicine privileges?

Neither CMS nor any of the private accrediting entities require that a physician who is granted telemedicine privileges also be granted an appointment to the medical staff. In fact, it may be difficult to do so because, although these physicians’ volume requirements will probably be high (and they therefore qualify for an active appointment), they will never be on-site, will never take call, will not want to be a medical staff officer, etc. You also need to remember that if you grant an appointment, this means that the physician has the attendant rights of a member, such as the right to a fair hearing. And so, you need to think the issue through and, if you are going to grant an appointment, you may need to create a new category
