In many hospitals, there is little or no interaction between the Medical Staff and the HR department. Medical Staff leaders engage in credentialing and peer review without ever thinking about the HR department. However, as the number of employed physicians grows, there are more and more practitioners who are governed by both the Medical Staff Bylaws, as well as the HR policies of the hospital. Organizations may be able to improve certain efficiencies by having a closer relationship between the Medical Staff process and HR. For example, certain employees in the HR department are typically very experienced in conducting interviews with hospital employees. They’re good at it, and the hospital employees feel comfortable with them. So why not revise the Medical Staff Peer Review Policy to make clear that HR employees and Medical Staff personnel will work together in conducting interviews that may be needed to assess a behavioral complaint about a physician? This session will focus on how these processes can come into better alignment and the benefits that can be gained by doing so.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the benefits that can be gained through the alignment of the Medical Staff and HR processes.
- Develop a “triage” process to use whenever a complaint is filed about a physician who is employed by the organization.
- Understand how to maximize peer review privilege protections, in light of state laws, when Medical Staff personnel and HR staff take part in joint fact-finding.
