A Word from the President


Welcome to the September issue of NAMSS Gateway. I can hardly believe that nine months have passed since I took on the role of President of the Board of Directors and that fall is upon us. With just over one month until the 41st Educational Conference & Exhibition and only two months until the holiday season begins, this is a busy time for all. If you hold your CPCS or CPMSM certification and are due to recertify this year, it can be overwhelming. Though I can’t help cross items off your to-do list, I’ve held NAMSS certifications for 21 years and can share my best tips for maintaining your elite credentials.
  1. Track your CE credit on an ongoing basis. NAMSS offers an easy-to-use tracking spreadsheet that helps you keep a running list of how many credits you’ve earned. View all the NAMSS CE opportunities and download the tracker here.
  2. Add reminders to your calendar. Don’t let your recertification date sneak up on you! Create annual and quarterly reminders to help you stay on top of your recertification date. Check to see when you are due to recertify.
  3. Get the most bang for your buck when selecting CE opportunities. Single certificants must earn 30 CE credits and dual certificants must earn 45 CE credits every three years. I’ve found that the easiest, most cost-effective way to collect all of these credits is by attending the Educational Conference & Exhibition. If you’re due to recertify and have a lot of credits left to earn, it’s not too late to join us next month in Colorado Springs. Explore the schedule to see how you can earn up to 32 CE credits in just five days.

Hospital Impact—Medical Staff Services Professionals: A New Role for the 21st Century

As standalone hospitals and clinics become part of larger, more complex integrated delivery systems, medical staff services professionals have become increasingly important members of the healthcare leadership team. The growth of healthcare jobs that require close vetting, providers that coalesce and interact in new ways and increasingly advanced vetting technologies are three reasons why medical staff services has become an increasingly challenging task. The National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) offers certifications for medical services management professionals. Along with the required education in order to take the exam for certification, it requires continuous employment in the medical services field for the last year and employment in the profession for five of the past eight years. According to NAMSS, the exam itself "focuses on the management role in medical services to include functions such as staffing, budgets, medical staff information systems, continuing education, and practitioner/provider recruitment and relations."

Paging Dr. Freelance: Hospitals' Use of Contract Doctors Soars Amid Physician Shortage

More doctors are opting for the flexibility of contract work, and an increasing number of hospitals -- desperate to fill staffing shortages -- are bringing these "locum tenens" on board. In the past, patient data suggested such freelance physicians weren't as skilled as those with more stable careers. Today, the skills gap appears to have closed. According to a survey from Staff Care, a locum tenens staffing company, the number of U.S. doctors working freelance has nearly doubled to 48,000 since 2002. Some health care recruiters forecast that number could double again in the next decade. Contract doctors say the perks are threefold. One, they often earn more on an hourly basis. Two, they don't have to wait for insurance reimbursements to get paid. And, three, they decide when and where they will work, then clock out without guilt when their shift ends.

Hospitals Ramping Up Round-the-Clock Staffing for Pregnancy Emergencies

More hospitals are taking steps to ensure adequate, immediate medical staffing for pregnancy emergencies. Some facilities schedule OB-GYNs for 24/7 coverage, others are turning to specialists known as OB-GYN hospitalists, while others are launching hybrid units known as obstetric emergency departments (or OBEDs). At Massachusetts General Hospital, labor-and-delivery doctors work 12- or 24-hour shifts to provide round-the-clock coverage and handle whatever arises along with the nursing staff. In Iowa, meanwhile, Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines is run in partnership with the OB Hospital Group. This national company oversees over 100 fully functioning emergency rooms nationwide. Dr. Rakhi Dimino, the company's Texas-based director of operations, says most OBEDs are staffed with one OB-GYN physician and two labor-and-delivery nurses around the clock.

A Utah Nurse’s Violent Arrest Puts Patient-Consent Law—and Police Conduct—in the Spotlight

The videotaped arrest of a nurse at a Utah hospital -- after she notified police, correctly, that they could not draw blood from an unconscious truck driver -- has been condemned by nursing organizations. The incident has brought patient-consent rules into the national discussion. The Supreme Court ruled in 2016 that blood can be drawn from drivers only for probable cause, with a warrant. The nurse and her legal representatives are using the video footage to persuade police to rethink their treatment of hospital staff. The Utah Nurses Association has encouraged as many people as possible to view the footage to understand a nurse's "ethical duty to act in the best interest of our patients at all times." Nurses' ethical code stipulates they must first promote a patient's rights, health, and safety, the American Nurses Association (ANA) states. ANA Executive Director Debbie Hatmaker says nurses typically learn about informed consent as part of their basic training, and most hospitals have clear policies about gaining consent from patients.

Study: Hospitals on Doctor-Buying Spree Raise Legal Questions

In recent years, hospitals have gone on a doctor-buying spree in many areas, acquiring so many independent practices that they have created near-monopolies on physicians. Recent research shows that large doctor practices, many owned by hospitals, exceed federal guidelines for market concentration in over 20 percent of the areas studied. Doctor deals are typically too small to trigger federal antitrust notice, finds a paper published in the journal Health Affairs. "You have a local hospital system and they're going in and buying one doctor at a time," reports Northwestern University economist and study co-author Christopher Ody. "Occasionally they're buying a group of five. But it's this really small scale" that adds up. The paper's results were gleaned from insurance data in states covering nearly one-eighth of the U.S. population. It found that 22 percent of markets for cardiologists, surgeons, and other specialties were "highly concentrated" as of 2013.

Pivot Health Aims to Disrupt Health Care Hiring With New Tech-Fueled Job Matching Platform

Pivot Health, a new Seattle-based startup, aims to make it easier for the health care industry to fill clinical worker positions. The company is developing technology that uses a machine learning algorithm to match job seekers with employers for whom they would likely want to work. The platform also offers career coaching and resume advice for job seekers. Pivot launched its Web-based hiring and job matching service in Washington state late last month, with plans to expand to Oregon and California by the end of the year. Pivot co-founder Simon Frey also said the technology can help hospitals meet such goals as increasing the number of nurse practitioners on staff or diversifying the staff they hire. The company charges employers a placement fee per hire, while the platform is free to use for job seekers.

Doctors From Top Medical Schools Prescribe Fewer Opioid Painkillers

According to a new study by Princeton University researchers, doctors who got their training at low-ranked medical schools wrote triple the number of opioid painkiller prescriptions as physicians who earned their diplomas at Ivy League or other top-tier schools. The Princeton scientists examined approximately two billion opioid prescriptions written in the U.S. between 2006 and 2014, along with the credentials of the 742,297 physicians who wrote them. "If all general practitioners had prescribed like those from the top-ranked school [Harvard], we would have 56.5 percent fewer opioid prescriptions and 8.5 percent fewer overdose deaths," calculated Janet Currie, economics professor at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. Since 2000, opioid overdose fatalities have doubled. Many were caused by drugs like OxyContin or Vicodin that were legally prescribed by physicians.
