Doctors' Day Ideas for celebration.

PURPOSE
National Doctors’ Day provides a time for people to show appreciation to the doctors who care for them or their loved ones.

RECOGNITION
Both patients and those who work for or with physicians may recognize, thank or show appreciation by giving cards, notes, commemorative tokens of remembrance, etc. The first National Doctors’ Day was on March 30, 1933, the anniversary of the first use of anesthesia. The day was celebrated by mailing cards to doctors and by placing flowers on the graves of deceased doctors. In 1990, then-President George Bush signed a resolution designating March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.

Patients who have long-term relationships with their doctors – for example, a woman during pregnancy; someone with a long-term or terminal illness; families who rely on their “family doctor”; or anyone who wants to thank a physician for the care he or she has provided – take the opportunity to single out a special doctor, psychologist, dentist, chiropractor, nurse practitioner, or other health-care professional.

Those who work in doctors’ offices, hospitals or other medical facilities take advantage of a designated time to be able to express thanks and appreciation for mentoring, being easy to work with, being dedicated, or just to recognize an ongoing working relationship.

The upcoming holiday honoring the doctors of America is a great chance for medical services professionals (MSPs) to thank their local doctors for providing caring, quality healthcare.

CELEBRATION
Here are some ways MSPs can show their appreciation for the important work of doctors; we suggest you check with your organization’s Human Resources and/or Public Relations Department on ways to implement some of these ideas.

  • Borrow from the originators and give a card. Have all MSPs sign it and include a photo of the MSP team. This is a great way to let physicians know how much you appreciate them, and to reinforce your important role within the healthcare system. A Happy Doctors’ Day banner covered in signatures works too!
  • The red carnation is the symbol of Doctors’ Day. Make table centerpieces for the cafeteria, bouquets for the lobby or boutonnieres for the doctors from this bright flower.
  • A themed poster announces the holiday and pays tribute to doctors. Take digital photos of your favorite docs in action and post them, along with testimonials from satisfied patients or appreciative staff members. Show off the poster in a display case or on an easel in the lobby where all hospital visitors can see it.
  • To publicly acknowledge the doctors you work with, work with the communications department at your hospital to send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Tout their recent accomplishments or hospital developments, comment on what you like about working with them and include how they contribute to your community.
  • A morning tea and brunch is a quick and enjoyable way to mingle with the doctors and introduce your team firsthand. Integrate some of the other ideas by decorating with red carnations or displaying a signed card or banner.
Another great spot to display your acknowledgement of all that doctors do is their lounge. If your hospital, company or office has a doctors’ lounge decorate with the flowers, poster or some tasty baked goods! Leave a flyer introducing the MSP team and what role you play. Treat ’em and teach’
