Principles of Medical Staff Organization and Healthcare Finance

Syllabus

Course Description Today's healthcare industry demand that medical services professionals be more knowledgeable and involved in the structure of the Medical Staff Organization (MSO) than ever before.

The course reviews the MSO structure and internal departmental function, the impact of medical staff leadership within other hospital departments, healthcare finance, and regulations that affect finance. 

Course Objective To provide an overview of the principles of Medical Staff Organization including the areas where it intersects with the hospital organization, as well as the various roles played by medical staff members and committees in hospital operations. Learning Outcome

At the conclusion of this Course, you should be able to:

  1. describe the extent of governing body authority over the medical staff;
  2. describe the responsibilities of the governing body and CEO pertaining to the medical staff organization;
  3. identify responsibilities of the medical staff organization (MSO);
  4. describe the role of the medical services professional;
  5. explain and discuss the basic content and purpose of bylaws for an organized medical staff, the essential elements of medical staff bylaws, and the requirements of various regulatory and accreditation bodies as pertain to bylaws;
  6. describe the difference between departmentalized and non departmentalized organization structures;
  7. describe the Medicare Conditions of Participation for the Medical Staff;
  8. describe medical staff status categories;
  9. discuss standards of ethical practice relating to healthcare;
  10. understand the concept and the process for accomplishing peer review;
  11. describe the role and functions of medical staff leaders and the Medical Executive Committee;
  12. outline the flow of financial resources in a healthcare facility and obtain a basic understanding of reimbursement for inpatient services;
  13. explain the role of peer review organizations;
  14. discuss managed care and define key managed care terms;
  15. describe alternate delivery systems; and
  16. understand types of alternative and complimentary medicine
