Course 1: Medical Staff Membership and Privileges is based on the Joint Commission’s 2006 Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals, the Joint Commission 2007 Prepublication Medical Staff standards, the Joint Commission 2007 Prepublication Leadership standards, and the Joint Commission 2007 Prepublication Human Resources standards.

  • Identify the required documentation that should be included in medical staff bylaws in order to meet Joint Commission standards for credentialing and privileging.
  • Define terminology relative to medical staff appointment and privilege delineation.
  • Recognize Joint Commission’s requirements for medical staff appointment and privileging.
  • Define responsibilities and privileges associated with temporary appointment to the medical staff.
  • Describe Joint Commission’s requirements for primary source verification prior to awarding of clinical privileges.
  • Understand the concepts of Focused Professional Practice Evaluation and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation.
  • Understand the Joint Commission requirements for credentialing physician-employed practitioners.
  • Know the Joint Commission requirements for credentialing and privileging advanced practice nurses and physician assistants.
