HISTORY
MAMSS is a professional organization established in 1979 in the State of Minnesota. MAMSS is an independent, non-profit association for Medical Staff Service Professionals throughout Minnesota. One of the key areas where we serve the medical community is through credentialing of medical providers. Credentialing provides a standard for recognizing the provider qualifications and validating broad-based knowledge of these professionals to ensure quality of health care to those they serve. We had 32 members in 1980. Today, we average over 200 members of medical staff and provider credentialing professionals. In 1991 the Northern Region of MAMSS was established and 1994 the Southern Region, and in 2011 the Central and Metro were organized to enhance the networking form for MAMSS members and to increase the opportunities for educational seminars while minimizing travel requirements.

CMS
From the Advisory Board Company: The ICD-10 Delay Clarified: What it Means for You
CMS recently released a proposed rule that would delay the ICD-10 compliance date by one year, until October 1, 2014. The agency considers a one-year delay a “reasonable compromise” between the incremental costs that a delay imposes on hospitals already on track for compliance in 2013 and the additional time that many small hospitals and provider groups need to become compliant.
Learn more about the ICD-10 delay from The Advisory Board Company and subscribe to the NAMSS Blog to receive regular industry updates.
Certification Commission of NAMSS (CCN) Announces Important Changes
The CCN wants to alert all certificants of some important changes to the Recertification, Expiration and Revocation of Certification Policy. These changes include:
Applications postmarked after the December 1 deadline are subject to a $50 late fee, and applications received postmarked after December 31 will not be accepted.
Requests for extension of the time frame to earn CEs must be submitted by December 1 of the year in which recertification is due, and any reuqest received after the December 1 deadline will not be considered. Candidates requesting an extenstion my pay a $50 fee to cover additional adminstrative services to monitor the extension. The candidate also must provide documenation of at least half of the required credits earned within the current recertification cycle.
Candidates who have been granted an extension will be subject to an audit of their application for the extended cycle, as well as during the next recertification cycle. CEs applied during the extension may not be used toward recertification in the following three year cycle.
The CCN made these amendments to the policy in order to apply a more objective process for the requests for extension. Certificants will no longer need to document "extenuating circumstances" that jusitfy the request for an extension; however, candidates are now limited to only one extension per recertification cycle, and two extensions over the lifetime of their certification(s). If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact certifcertification@NAMSS.org or (202) 367-1196.

Telemedicine Update
On May 5, 2011, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published a final rule for hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAHs) that will allow for a new credentialing and privileging process for physicians and practitioners providing telemedicine services. The new rule has a 60-day implementation window. This final rule gives hospitals and CAHs more flexibility in credentialing and privileging telemedicine providers. Starting July 5, 2011, the governing body of a hospital or CAH will be allowed to rely on the credentialing and privileging decisions of a distant-site hospital or telemedicine entity when making its own credentialing and privileging decisions. The rule also allows hospitals and CAHs to rely on information from non-hospital telemedicine providers such as teleradiology and other telehealth centers. Read the final ruling.
