The inaugural session of the NAMSS Virtual Executive Roundtable features population health expert, David B. Nash, MD, MBA, founding Dean of Jefferson College of Population Health. Considered one of the “most powerful persons” in healthcare, Dr. Nash has received top recognition for his work, including the Philadelphia Business Journal’s Healthcare Heroes Award in 1997, the Wharton Healthcare Alumni Achievement Award in 2009, and in 2012 received both the Joseph Wharton award for “social impact” and the Philadelphia Business Journal innovation award. Dr. Nash earned his medical degree from University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY and his MBA from the Wharton College at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. He completed his residency at The Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, his clinical fellowship at University of Pennsylvania and a research fellowship at Kaiser Hospitals in Portland, OR.

Dr. Nash will present the Virtual Roundtable sessions with 2017 NAMSS President, Susan DuBois, CPCS, CPMSM, who will lead the facilitated discussions.


Part One: Update on Population Health

What You Will Learn:

  • Explain the scope of the challenge facing our wasteful and profligate health care system;
  • Outline two or more definitions of population health;
  • Connect and contrast the tenets of population health to the basic tools of health reform including pay for performance, bundled payment and ACOs; and
  • Formulate a potential population health ecosystem of the future.

Part Two: Quality and Safety in Population Health

What You Will Learn:

  • Identify the key current quality and safety challenges and trace their evolution over the past century;
  • Compare and contrast current measures under reform to recently proposed measures especially as they relate to closing the feedback loop with clinicians;
  • Differentiate between inpatient vs ambulatory measures and assess their importance independently; and
  • Speculate about the importance of new measures of accountability and transparency.

Part Three: The Role of the Consumer

What You Will Learn:

  • Trace the history of consumer engagement and explain the paradox of the creative destruction of American medicine;
  • Discuss many of the emerging tools to connect with consumers including telemedicine;
  • Assess the literature on the value of consumer engagement and draw inferences about its use across different age cohorts; and
  • Ability to defend the need for team based approach to the consumer and formulate key take home messages.
