An updated version of the popular session at the NAMSS 2014 Annual Conference, these presentations will include a complete overview of the Medicare Hospital Conditions of Participation related to medical staff credentialing and privileging. This is a two-part webinar occurring on two separate days. Individuals who are unable to attend one of the two days will have access to the recording for four (4) weeks after the conclusion of the webinar.

David W. Eddinger, Captain United States Public Health Service, Retired, received his BS in Nursing (1980) and a BA in Psychology (1981) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and his Masters of Public Health (1987) from Tulane University. He has over 30 years of experience in healthcare. At CMS, he serves as the technical director for hospital survey and certification. In this role, he works daily with issues related to hospital compliance with the CMS Hospital Conditions of Participation and other CMS regulations affecting hospital certification as a Medicare provider. A significant portion of his hospital certification duties include providing policy analysis of hospital certification situations related to survey methods and policy, initial certification or termination, the provider-based rules, acquisitions and mergers, hospital-within-hospitals, collocations, and satellites, and IPPS excluded hospitals and units.

At the end of these presentations, participants will be able to:
- Describe the differences between privileging and credentialing within the privileging process
- Provide an overall summary of the steps within the Medicare hospital privileging process
- Identify the types of individuals who must go through the hospital’s privileging process
- Understand the decisions a hospital should make prior to implementing a system to allow outpatient orders from practitioners who are not members of the hospital’s Medical staff
- Describe the major issue that may arise regarding the physician/practitioner who writes a POLST/MOLST
